Early Origins
The name Wessington is thought to derive from Old English, meaning “the farm or settlement of Wassa’s people.” The area was originally part of the ancient parish of Crich, and early records show it as a small farming settlement in the Middle Ages.
Wessington appears in records as early as the 12th century, associated with Crich Chase, a royal hunting forest belonging to the Crown and later to the Duchy of Lancaster. Villagers would have farmed small plots and worked on the estates that surrounded the area.
Industrial Influence
Although Wessington remained primarily agricultural, the 19th century brought industrial changes to the region. Nearby towns like Alfreton and Matlock saw coal mining, lead mining, and quarrying expand, providing employment to local residents. Wessington’s proximity to these industrial areas meant some villagers combined farming with mining or other manual trades.
The village itself remained relatively untouched by heavy industry, preserving much of its rural charm. Its position on higher ground also gave it strategic views across the Amber Valley.
Village Life and Development
Wessington has long been a close-knit community centered around its village green, one of the defining features still enjoyed today. Historically, fairs and gatherings were held there, and it continues to serve as a focal point for community life.
The Methodist Chapel and local school were important 19th-century additions, reflecting the village’s growing population and the Victorian emphasis on faith and education.
In the 20th century, Wessington evolved into a peaceful residential village. While agriculture declined, many residents began commuting to nearby towns for work. Despite this, Wessington has maintained a strong sense of local identity and community spirit.
Today
Modern Wessington retains much of its historical character — stone cottages, open fields, and scenic views of the Derbyshire countryside. The village green, local pub, and annual community events continue traditions that have lasted for generations. It’s now part of the North East Derbyshire district, known for its mix of heritage, countryside, and modern rural living.
