Early History

Prehistoric and Roman Times Evidence of early settlement exists in the surrounding area, though Ripley itself doesn’t appear in the Domesday Book of 1086. However, the wider Amber Valley has traces of Roman occupation, particularly linked to lead and ironworking.
*Medieval Period: Ripley was originally a small agricultural settlement. It was recorded in documents from the 13th century as "Ryppeleg," meaning *strip of land* or cleared woodland.

### Industrial Growth

Coal and Iron -: The real expansion of Ripley came during the 18th and 19th centuries, when the Butterley Company was founded in 1790 by Benjamin Outram, Francis Beresford, and William Jessop. This company became one of the most important ironworks in the country, producing railway lines, bridges, engines, and structures worldwide (including parts of St Pancras Station in London).
Railways and Canals**: Ripley was served by the Butterley Gangroad** (1793), an early horse-drawn railway designed by Benjamin Outram to transport limestone. The area was also linked to the Cromford Canal.
Coal Mining**: Local collieries became a major source of employment through the 19th and 20th centuries, shaping the town’s growth.
