  • 🕰️ Early Origins

The name Shirland is believed to derive from the Old English words Scir (meaning “bright” or “clear”) and land (meaning “estate” or “enclosure”), suggesting “bright land” or “clear pasture.”

The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as part of the holdings of William Peverel, a Norman lord granted vast lands in Derbyshire after the Norman Conquest. At that time, Shirland was primarily a small agricultural settlement surrounded by open fields and woodland.

    ⚔️ Medieval Shirland

During the Middle Ages, Shirland became a manorial village centred around Shirland Hall, a manor house owned by the de Grey family, who held the title Barons Grey of Shirland. The de Greys were an important noble family in medieval England, and their estate gave the village a prominent position in local society.

The Parish Church of St Leonard, which dates mainly from the 13th century, stands as one of the key historical landmarks. It was the spiritual and social heart of the community for centuries and still remains a focal point in the village today.
