Early Origins

Chesterfield is one of Derbyshire’s oldest towns, with origins going back over 1,000 years.
Its name comes from the Old English “ceaster feld” — meaning “open land near a Roman fort.” This likely refers to a Roman settlement that stood near the River Rother, on what’s now the modern town centre.

By 1086, Chesterfield was recorded in the Domesday Book, listed as “Cestrefeld,” a small but established community surrounded by farmland.

Medieval Chesterfield

Chesterfield began to grow in importance during the 12th and 13th centuries.
It gained a market charter in 1204 from King John, allowing it to hold weekly markets — a tradition that still thrives today in the famous open-air Market Square, one of the largest in England.

The town’s most iconic building, The Parish Church of St. Mary and All Saints, was built in the 14th century. Its “Crooked Spire” — twisted and leaning dramatically — became a beloved symbol of the town. Legends say the spire twisted when the Devil sat on it, though in truth it likely warped due to unseasoned timber and lead covering.

Industrial Growth

Like much of Derbyshire, Chesterfield transformed during the Industrial Revolution.
Coal mining, ironworks, and engineering brought prosperity and population growth in the 18th and 19th centuries. The arrival of the Midland Railway (1840) made it a key transport hub for the region’s industries.

Famous local figures include George Stephenson, the “Father of Railways,” who spent his final years in Chesterfield and is buried in Holy Trinity Church.
