Religious Life and Community Growth

In the early 1300s, Roger de Brunnesley obtained a licence to build a chapel on his lands, possibly alleviating the need for locals to travel to Greasley’s parish church in poor weather.
By 1837–38, a new chapel of ease, later dedicated to St James, was erected—funded in part by the Duke of Newcastle, the Church Building Society, and local colliery owners. The chancel was added in 1877
