Early History

  • The name Carlton comes from Old English “Ceorlatun” meaning “farmstead of the free peasants”.

  • It appears in the Domesday Book (1086) as “Carentune,” when it was a small agricultural settlement.

🏡 Growth into a Village

  • For centuries, Carlton was a farming community east of Nottingham.

  • By the 18th and 19th centuries, population grew thanks to the Industrial Revolution. Many locals worked in nearby industries, especially lace-making, textiles, and coal mining.

  • Carlton gradually shifted from a rural village into a suburban township.

🚉 Transport & Expansion

  • The opening of the Nottingham–Lincoln railway (1846) and nearby stations helped Carlton expand.

  • By the late 19th century, new housing developments made Carlton popular with workers commuting into Nottingham.

🏘️ 20th Century

  • In 1894, Carlton became part of the Carlton Urban District Council, which later merged into Gedling Borough (1974).

  • Large-scale housing estates were built before and after World War II, making it one of Nottingham’s bigger suburbs.

  • Carlton also developed schools, churches, and leisure facilities as the population grew.

🌳 Today

  • Carlton is a residential suburb just 3 miles east of Nottingham city centre.

  • It has a mix of Victorian terraces, 20th-century estates, and modern housing.

  • Key features include Carlton Hill shopping area, local parks (such as Gedling Country Park nearby), and good transport links into Nottingham.

  • It’s part of the wider Greater Nottingham urban area, known for its community feel.
