Early History

Belper, located in the **Derwent Valley**, has roots going back to the **medieval period**.
The name likely comes from the French *“Beau Repaire”* (meaning “beautiful retreat”), given by Norman settlers.
Originally, Belper was a small settlement known for **ironworking and nail-making**, industries that dominated the town for centuries.

### 🔨 Industrial Growth

By the **18th century**, Belper had become one of the most important centres of the **nail-making trade** in England. Almost every cottage had a nail shop attached.
The real turning point came with the **Industrial Revolution**.
Jedediah Strutt- (an associate of Richard Arkwright) built some of the world’s earliest water-powered cotton mills** in BELPER from the 1770s onwards.
* These **Strutt Mills**, along with the model housing for workers (the “Strutt cottages”), made Belper a pioneering industrial town.

### 🌍 World Heritage Status

Today, BELPER is part of the **Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site** (awarded by UNESCO in 2001). The town is recognised for its contribution to the birth of the modern factory system and urban planning for industrial workers.

### 🏘️ Modern Belper

Belper still retains much of its historic charm, with **stone cottages, old mills, and workers’ housing**.
Its heritage is celebrated with events, museums, and walking trails, making it a popular spot for history enthusiasts and visitors exploring Derbyshire.
